You’re no doubt aware Anna Wintour supports stars from the world of sport via the cover of Vogue. Throughout her tenure at the helm of the American fashion bible, Wintour has endorsed the likes of Marion Jones, LeBron James, Naomi Osaka, Simone Biles, and Coco Gauff while Serena Williams has a total of four covers under her belt. Up next on the cover of Vogue with the unveiling of the Winter 2025 issue are Angel Reese and Gabby Thomas. The American professional basketball player and American track and field athlete both pose for Norman Jean Roy. Reese strikes a pose in a ruby red Versace number, as chosen by stylist Julia Sarr-Jamois. Gabby Thomas (also photographed by Norman Jean Roy) is captured in crisp black and white, dressed by stylist Yohana Lebasi in a fringed Sportmax top and Tory Burch shoes.

“NO! We only like fashion with sports when models and a few celebrities do editorials inspired by sports practices,” instantly declared DK92.

“Oh no. I was dreaming of some movie star on the cover, like Demi, Angelina or Pamela,” shared forum member jeje10.

“I don’t know anything about women’s basketball but it’s weird that Vogue didn’t pick Caitlin Clark, I thought she was supposed to be the big star?” Marc10 quizzed.

Ivancica commented: “I like Gabby Thomas, but not this cover, unfortunately!”

“I couldn’t care less about a sports cover but I don’t mind the first one with Angel Reese. I like the color scheme and styling,” admired kokobombon.

“The Angel Reese cover is the strongest out of the two. It doesn’t rock my world but it feels… fierce(?). I like the coloring, the stare (despite the weird-looking eyes), the movement of the hair, and how Reese is wearing that Versace. Overall, it’s strong and commanding,” vogue28 voiced.

“I legitimately saw more compelling pictures on America’s Next Top Model,” exclaimed helmutnotdead.

“Creativity for everyone but the people at Vogue,” voiced an underwhelmed avonlea002.

“Absolutely awful. Also, is it just me or has I&V really fallen off?” mepps asked.

Yet not everyone was left so disappointed. “I love the cover, models, styling, and composition! The cover looks fresh and exciting,” admired MModa.

“Actually kinda love it, and I’m here for Anna Wintour stepping up her game with these model covers for us. As a group cover photograph, everything is working for me – I love the jeans and white top combo. All the girls look great!” enthused vogue28.

“I like it! Not perfect by any means and that grey background… well. I don’t expect much (or anything really), from I&V but the model selection is very on point,” WAVES praised.

Forum Debate: Does Melania Trump Deserve the Cover of Vogue – Again? https://www.thefashionspot.com/forum-buzz/894530-discussion-does-melania-trump-deserve-another-cover-of-vogue/ Tue, 12 Nov 2024 18:27:41 +0000 https://www.thefashionspot.com/?p=894530 "It will probably never happen."

US Vogue February 2005 : Melania Trump by Mario Testino

Given the fact U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will once again serve as President of the United States come January, the topic has arisen on theFashionSpot forums whether or not Anna Wintour will grant Melania Trump the cover of Vogue – again.

Throughout her storied tenure at American Vogue, Wintour has endorsed the likes of Hilary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and Jill Biden via the magazine’s front covers – often on more than one occasion. After all, it has become somewhat of a tradition for Vogue to profile the First Ladies of the United States. The first was when Lou Henry Hoover (wife of President Herbert Hoover) sat for a portrait by photographer Edward Steichen in the 1920s.

You’re no doubt aware it wouldn’t exactly be the first time Anna Wintour endorsed Mrs. Trump as a Vogue cover star. Ahead of the lavish Trump Mar-a-Lago wedding ceremony in 2005, Wintour gave up the February 2005 issue to the former model, who posed for photographer Mario Testino. In the cover photograph, Melania was exclusively profiled wearing her Christian Dior wedding gown (designed by John Galliano). Melania Trump was later notably absent from the cover and pages of Vogue during her time as First Lady from 2017 until 2021. However, will Anna (a noted Democrat supporter) give up the cover of Melania this time around?

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“This digital cover just reiterates the ridiculous childishness of Anna Wintour for her refusal to put Melania Trump on the cover of Vogue. People are evidently supportive of this woman, and as a First Lady (for the second time I might add), it is about time that the fashion industry stops being so biased.” [Frederic01]

“It will probably never happen. I think Trump is such a divisive person and that some people of the fashion industry have voiced their dislike of his politic than it’s irreparable. Putting Melania Trump on the cover would show a great deal of hypocrisy.” [Lola701]

“It’s weird to me that people act like First Ladies getting a Vogue cover is a real tradition, Anna just put Michelle, Hillary and Jill on the covers. There was no precedent. First Ladies belong on magazines like Ladies Home Journal or Redbook, not Vogue. Period.” [blueorchid]

“Queen Melania doesn’t need some worthless Vogue cover.” [mepps]

“I mean I don’t think she should get a cover. It would be a signifier of a mood shift though, of Vogue not being married to a single party. They do want to sell to everyone I assume without prejudice.” [NakedAndAfraid]

“Melania had her cover during the golden years. I’d like it if she got another one. She’s actually fashionable, regardless of what people think of Trump.” [Scotty]

Vogue‘s long-serving editor-in-chief Anna Wintour opted to close out 2024 on a high, enlisting Marc Jacobs as the magazine’s first-ever guest editor. Wintour called upon the American designer to guest-edit the December 2024 issue. Jacobs enlisted Kaia Gerber as cover girl in the process. The all-American beauty, who previously graced the American fashion bible for April 2020 and June/July 2021 posed Steven Meisel. In two of the three cover photographs, Kaia is dressed by stylist Grace Coddington in looks from Jacobs’ Spring 2024 collection for a twosome of vibrant and joyous covers. For the third and final cover offering, Jacobs and Vogue commissioned Canadian visual artist Anna Weyant to paint a portrait of Gerber. Elsewhere in the Vogue December 2024 issue, Dutch photographic duo Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh celebrate all-things movement and dance.

Thankfully for us, Vogue documented the whole process and uploaded a 15-minute video of the making of the December 2024 edition to YouTube. It’s a must-watch, to say the least.

Throughout 2024, Anna Wintour has played it safe as Vogue‘s head honcho – until now. After all, the industry icon who has held the position as editor-in-chief since 1988 has welcomed a whole slew of old faces back onto the cover of the American fashion bible. Those faces have included everyone from Zendaya to Kendall Jenner and Blake Lively to Kamala Harris. However, Wintour throws us a curveball to round out the year, enlisting none other than Marc Jacobs as Vogue guest editor – the magazine’s very first. The famed American fashion designer secured Kaia Gerber as his Vogue cover star in the process, who posed for firm forum favorite Steven Meisel and artist Anna Weyant. In the first and second of the three collectable covers (below), Kaia is dressed by Grace Coddington in looks from Jacobs’ Spring 2024 collection.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“YES! I love everything. Meisel is back at US Vogue, Kaia giving us her best work in a long time, and in that Marc Jacobs collection. What a dream!” immediately exclaimed ReneSanchez.

“I have to say, this really caught me off guard. The art direction here is stunning. There’s a great mix of fashion, beauty and art. Vogue should definitely think outside the box more often with their covers. Plus, we’ve got Meisel back on Vogue!” heralded Kenny.

“Very fun and surprising!” chimed in LastNight.

Also very much a fan was MModa. “Spectacular! The issue will be a Christmas gift to myself. Absolutely love the full-body cover. I love the Marc Jacobs evening dress, the hair, the makeup, and the high-fashion drama. The colors look delicious. I love that the issue is edited by the brilliant Marc Jacobs. A fantastic way to end the year,” they applauded.

“I’m into this, and I’m not even a massive Marc Jacobs fan,” confessed vogue28. “This level of fun, joy, and playfulness is precisely what’s missing from fashion magazines nowadays. Those covers with Kaia Gerber by Steven Meisel are delightful, so vibrant and visually arresting.”

You’re no doubt fully aware that Anna Wintour has liked to mix politics and fashion via the cover of Vogue. After all, throughout time, the magazine’s long-serving editor insisted on giving Hilary Clinton a Vogue makeover in 1998. Michelle Obama was granted three covers of the American fashion bible during her time as First Lady, and current First Lady Jill Biden has also covered Vogue twice. Kamala Harris is also a favorite of Wintour’s, with the Vice President (and candidate for President of the United States in November) taking to the special October 2024 digital cover of Vogue. Harris was photographed on October 7 at her official residence in Washington, DC for the occasion, captured via the lens of Annie Leibovitz. Styled by Leslie Fremar, the now two-time Vogue cover star wears her own Gabriela Hearst suit in the cover photograph.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Why does the cover look like it was all Photoshopped together?” immediately asked callmejaeden.

“I was confused when I saw this cover because they just revealed the Billie Eilish cover. Why did Kamala Harris get shafted to digital? Perhaps it got a last-minute approval?” questioned Yohji.

“Why is it digital? Well, for one, the whole thing was put together literally last week, a full month after the actual October cover was released. Anna wants her legacy to be something more than fashion so badly,” noted forum member KoV.

Children Surrender commented: “I hate the fact the fashion industry has to do stunts like this!”

Yet not everyone was so unsatisfied. “It’s flattering. I like the outfit colors, rich and earthy, and the pose is attractive,” reasoned NakedAndAfraid.

“I happen to like this a whole lot better than the Billie Eilish cover. In terms of political figures on the cover of Vogue, nothing seems to compare to Michelle Obama for December 2016 – or even the Hilary Clinton cover. Yet the colors here are lovely, love the richness of everything, and it’s better than Kamala’s first cover which felt… cheesy,” voiced vogue28.

Throughout 2024, there’s been a recurring theme with the covers of Anna Wintour’s Vogue. The American fashion bible’s long-serving editor has welcomed old favorites back onto the title, with seven out of nine cover subjects (thus far) having fronted Vogue on previous occasions (often more than once). Four years after her last, Billie Eilish is welcomed back as a Vogue cover star, with the unveiling of the November 2024 issue. Wintour first welcomed Eilish onto the magazine in 2020, celebrating the American singer-songwriter and Grammy Award-winning artist with a quartet of covers. This time, Billie poses on just one cover, via the lens of photographer Mikael Jansson. In the intriguing cover shot, Eilish is styled by Ib Kamara in a Gucci suit and a shirt and tie from Bottega Veneta.

“This does absolutely zilch for me. Never been one for Billie Eilish, and I despise that leaning into the camera pose. The colors aren’t at all bad, and I like the icy blue eyes and the makeup look on Billie here,” vogue28 voiced the moment the cover dropped.

“The only thing I like about the cover are the colors,” MModa added.

“The colors ARE really nice,” admitted forum member blueorchid in agreement.

Also sharing the same approval toward the colors was MyNameIs. “LOVE the colors. Hate everything else,” they exclaimed.

“I like the colors but this looks like Taylor Swift’s September 2019 cover because of the pose,” Kenny pointed out.

“Also reminds me of Taylor’s September cover from 5 years ago, but I do like this more than I expected. IB Kamara doing the heavy lifting,” chimed in KoV.

Anna Wintour sure does mean business when welcoming back old favorites onto the cover of Vogue. The editor who has served as the magazine’s figurehead since 1988 has brought back the likes of Jill Biden, Kendall Jenner, Zendaya and Blake Lively as Vogue cover stars over recent months,. Now, Wintour reinstates Lady Gaga as the American fashion bible’s cover star for October 2024. Precisely six years after her last, the American singer-songwriter and actress (who showed up to the 2024 Venice Film Festival in a voluminous Christian Dior gown and Philip Treacy headpiece) poses for Ethan James Green. Across a pair of dynamic covers, the Joker: Folie à Deux actress is styled by Alex Jordan Harrington. In cover one (below), Gaga wears a Balenciaga coat from the Fall 2024 Haute Couture collection. In the second, full-length alternative cover, Gaga strikes a pose in a look from Maison Margiela Artisanal designed by John Galliano.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Oh this is fantastic! Feels like a proper fashion shoot. US Vogue have been so hit and miss with Lady Gaga over the years, but this is perfection. Love the full body cover,” enthused LastNight.

“I love the covers, especially the full-length cover. It’s Gaga’s best editorial for American Vogue,” applauded forum member jeje10.

“Not even sure why that first cover even made it to print, when that second full-length cover is far more superior,” said vogue28. “Absolutely love it, and love the fact Ethan James Green was commissioned to photograph Lady Gaga. This feels very… fashion and so perfectly executed. I’m a fan!”

Not everyone, however, was convinced. “How dour and depressing. I get that this is promo for her role as Harley Quinn, but damn. Fried hair and running mascara on the cover of US Vogue?” asked WinstonH20.

“It’s lacking… something,” confessed aracic. “I can’t put my finger on it. I like the idea, but something is taking me out of the fantasy.”

Over recent months, Anna Wintour has been on a little bit of a mission to welcome back old favorites onto the cover of Vogue. After all, the likes of Jill Biden, Kendall Jenner and Zendaya have each made a return to the American fashion bible’s front covers over recent months, with Blake Lively the latest. That’s right, Wintour invites the actress back for a fourth time, with the unveiling of the all-important September edition for 2024. Wintour insisted on Australian film director (and friend) Baz Luhrmann profiling Lively for her latest Vogue cover shoot, with Hugh Jackman getting in on the action too for a “Hitchcock-inspired fashion fantasia”. Styled by Tonne Goodman, Blake sports a voluminous up-do in the portrait cover shot, clutching a Cartier diamond necklace and dressed in a black dress from the Fall 2024 Michael Kors collection.

“JESUS… A new LOW!” immediately exclaimed DK92 the second the cover dropped.

“I really don’t get the Blake-Hugh-Baz link up? It’s so random. It almost feels like it was supposed to be Nicole Kidman but she bailed out on the last minute so they had to book someone else,” laughed Marc10.

“I’m sure it’s been one of the biggest thrills of Anna’s life to combine the names Blake Lively, Hugh Jackman and Baz Luhrmann. Outside of these being some of Anna’s favorites, I don’t really understand the combination,” LastNight added.

Thiago asked: “Where is Annie Leibovitz when they need her?”

“This is the type of expansive shoot that Grace Coddington and Annie Leibovitz would’ve done so well,” sighed forum member MagazineAddict89.

Not everyone, however, was left so underwhelmed. “love all the glamour, elegance, and the hair! The cover photographs take me back in time, especially, the pages of American Vogue in the 1960’s. I particularly love the profile shot of Lively the most,” MModa enthused.

Anna Wintour has been at the helm of American Vogue for almost four whole decades. Throughout that time, we’ve most definitely encountered personalities from the world of sport as cover stars. Everyone from LeBron James and Ashton Eaton to Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles have become Vogue cover stars during Wintour’s tenure. Serena Williams has graced the American fashion bible four times, and we will never forget the Marion Jones cover from 2001. More recently, Wintour endorsed Coco Gauff and Sha’Carri Richardson is unveiled as Vogue‘s digital cover subject for August 2024. Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the American track and field sprinter poses for photographer Luis Alberto Rodriguez down on the starting line. In the striking cover image, Richardson is styled by Julia Sarr-Jamois in a bodysuit and billowing skirt from Ralph Lauren collection, teamed with a pair of gold Nike sneakers.

“It’s hideous,” immediately called out mepps.

“American Vogue has always struggled to create decent covers with black athletes. Not a flattering shot at all,” said forum member thiago.

“I just want a break from the athletes and obvious Anna Wintour favs. PLEASE!” declared tomtakesphotos.

Also quick to question Vogue‘s latest was KoV. “The cover photo to me looks like it could be on a billboard for Nike or Gatorade or something. It’s a dynamic image, but I don’t think it’s a Vogue cover.”

MModa, however, could not have disagreed more. “I love everything about the cover. Love the colors,” they admired.

Lola701 shared the same positive attitude, commenting: “I like the cover. It works for a digital cover and it goes well with the Olympics. The composition is really the strength of the cover.”
