You’re no doubt aware Anna Wintour supports stars from the world of sport via the cover of Vogue. Throughout her tenure at the helm of the American fashion bible, Wintour has endorsed the likes of Marion Jones, LeBron James, Naomi Osaka, Simone Biles, and Coco Gauff while Serena Williams has a total of four covers under her belt. Up next on the cover of Vogue with the unveiling of the Winter 2025 issue are Angel Reese and Gabby Thomas. The American professional basketball player and American track and field athlete both pose for Norman Jean Roy. Reese strikes a pose in a ruby red Versace number, as chosen by stylist Julia Sarr-Jamois. Gabby Thomas (also photographed by Norman Jean Roy) is captured in crisp black and white, dressed by stylist Yohana Lebasi in a fringed Sportmax top and Tory Burch shoes.

Radhika Jones continues to implement some serious pull when it comes to enlisting cover stars for Vanity Fair. Jones, who has served as editor-in-chief since 2017, has welcomed everyone from Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway to Simone Biles and Selena Gomez as cover stars throughout 2024. Making a not-so-surprising appearance together across three covers of Vanity Fair for November are Wicked co-stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The pair pose together in cover one, via the lens of photographer Norman Jean Roy. Stylist Patti Wilson dressed Erivo in Louis Vuitton and Grande in Marc Jacobs. Erivo also sports Vuitton in her respective solo cover, while Grande poses in a Chanel creation on the third and final cover offering.

Over recent months, Anya Taylor-Joy has been a constant sight down at our local newsstand. After all, the American-born Argentine-British actress has greeted us via the covers of American ELLE, British GQ, Vogue Australia, Flaunt, and ELLE Australia. Vogue Hong Kong is the latest fashion title to jump on the Anya Taylor-Joy bandwagon. The magazine’s editorial director Kat Yeung welcomes the vibrant blonde beauty onto the all-important September 2024 edition. Captured by photographer Norman Jean Roy and styled by Dena Giannini, Taylor-Joy dials up the glamour tenfold across a trio of covers. In each of the three cover images, the Christian Dior brand ambassador is dressed in an array of looks from the fabled French fashion house’s Fall 2024 collection.

Anna Wintour continues to throw major curveballs at the helm of American Vogue. The editor who has been installed at the top job since 1988 gave us none other than Miuccia Prada as the magazine’s March 2024 cover star and astounds us all the same as Jill Biden is unveiled as Vogue‘s surprise and unexpected August 2024 cover star. Yet not completely unexpected, right? After all, the First Lady of the United States is essentially making a return to the fashion bible’s front cover, exactly three years after her last (as Wintour continues to show support toward President Joe Biden and his bid to be re-elected). Via the lens of photographer Norman Jean Roy, Dr. Jill Biden poses in the rather pensive and charming cover shot, styled by Max Ortega in a Ralph Lauren Collection dress and a pair of Irene Neuwirth earrings.

Not everyone, however, was left so underwhelmed. “I like it, way better than the August 2021 cover at least. Throughout 2023, Vanity Fair hasn’t exactly produced an array of buzz-worthy covers for us to rave over. Not even the magazine’s annual Hollywood edition broke the internet. You could argue VF‘s best cover over the past twelve months, was just last month when Radhika Jones resurrected a previously-unpublished photograph of Barbra Streisand. Closing out the year fronting the title’s double December 2023/January 2024 is Greta Gerwig, who after a mega successful year with the release of the critically-acclaimed Barbie movie poses for photographer Norman Jean Roy. In the serene cover portrait, the American actress, writer and director cozies up in a knitted Louis Vuitton sweater, selected for the occasion by stylist Natasha Royt.

Vanity Fair‘s latest, however, had our forum members divided in their opinion. “Norman Jean Roy is on a roll. It seems like he’s taking a lot of the jobs that would have been for Annie Leibovitz,” expressed DK92.

“Oh wow! I have admired Greta for ages and I am so happy for her. This cover is so beautiful,” instantly approved forum member iriswills.

“It is a lovely side portrait. The color palette reflects the winter months,” admired MModa.

“The colors do indeed reflect the colder months perfectly,” replied vogue28. “I do, however, loathe of the use of a side portrait as a cover image. The cover overall just feels rather lifeless, cold and uninviting.”

“I like Greta Gerwig and what she has produced. This cover is just alright,” oaklee91 chimed in.

Mepps most certainly wasn’t feeling it, commenting: “The cover is as dull as she is!”

The best-selling female rapper of all time appears before the lens of photographer Norman Jean Roy, for what is her first American Vogue cover appearance, with stylist Max Ortega dressing Minaj in a look from Valentino’s Fall 2023 haute couture collection.

I am 100% here for the surprise of seeing Minaj as Vogue‘s cover star, and it’s an added bonus that the outcome is so easy on the eye.
