You’re no doubt aware Anna Wintour supports stars from the world of sport via the cover of Vogue. Throughout her tenure at the helm of the American fashion bible, Wintour has endorsed the likes of Marion Jones, LeBron James, Naomi Osaka, Simone Biles, and Coco Gauff while Serena Williams has a total of four covers under her belt. Up next on the cover of Vogue with the unveiling of the Winter 2025 issue are Angel Reese and Gabby Thomas. The American professional basketball player and American track and field athlete both pose for Norman Jean Roy. Reese strikes a pose in a ruby red Versace number, as chosen by stylist Julia Sarr-Jamois. Gabby Thomas (also photographed by Norman Jean Roy) is captured in crisp black and white, dressed by stylist Yohana Lebasi in a fringed Sportmax top and Tory Burch shoes.

“NO! We only like fashion with sports when models and a few celebrities do editorials inspired by sports practices,” instantly declared DK92.

“Oh no. I was dreaming of some movie star on the cover, like Demi, Angelina or Pamela,” shared forum member jeje10.

“I don’t know anything about women’s basketball but it’s weird that Vogue didn’t pick Caitlin Clark, I thought she was supposed to be the big star?” Marc10 quizzed.

Ivancica commented: “I like Gabby Thomas, but not this cover, unfortunately!”

“I couldn’t care less about a sports cover but I don’t mind the first one with Angel Reese. I like the color scheme and styling,” admired kokobombon.

“The Angel Reese cover is the strongest out of the two. It doesn’t rock my world but it feels… fierce(?). I like the coloring, the stare (despite the weird-looking eyes), the movement of the hair, and how Reese is wearing that Versace. Overall, it’s strong and commanding,” vogue28 voiced.

To say Chioma Nnadi hasn’t been cutting it as Head of Editorial Content at British Vogue would be an understatement. An understatement of rather epic proportions. Despite pulling in big-name cover stars like FKA Twigs, Zendaya, Kylie Jenner, and Florence Pugh, the magazine’s front covers over recent months have been… somewhat questionable. Nnadi, now with a total of nine issues under her belt, tapped SZA as a British Vogue cover star for December 2024. The American singer and songwriter poses before the lens of photographer Nadine Ijewere, as the magazine’s final cover star of 2024. Throughout the cover shoot, SZA was styled by Julia Sarr-Jamois, SZA bundles up in a lime green knit from Seán McGir’s debut Alexander McQueen Fall 2024 collection.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“The photography is nothing special. Very generic. It looks like a catalog shot from an email newsletter,” GivenchyHomme critiqued upon checking out the cover.

“Why does this edition have to be sooo bland,” blueorchid chimed in.

“Another month, another cover, another prominent display of Chioma Nnadi sucking the life out of British Vogue. This is the best the team could produce for readers over the holiday season? guess the Alexander McQueen piece is Grinch green? I feel so majorly underwhelmed by this,” voiced vogue28.

Also left disappointed was forum member upNorth. “Why does no one try? Who is asking for this non-event?” they asked.

“Why is this so muted? That grey background has no business being in an end-of-year cover,” noted Drusilla.

“The cover gives nothing especially for a December issue, but I am just so happy that SZA finally gets a Vogue cover,” confessed crmsn.

The year 2024 might just belong to Lulu Tenney. After all, since January, the American fashion model has became the face of mega brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Coperni, Chanel and Celine. Not to mention the industry favorite has graced the covers of Vogue Korea and Vogue Hong Kong. Added to Tenney’s stellar body of work this month is the cover of Vogue Spain for August 2024. In a shared fashion shoot with editions of Vogue worldwide, the model-of-the-moment poses for photographer Oliver Hadlee Pearch. Against a stark white studio backdrop, Lulu strikes a pose in the retro-esque cover photograph, dressed in a total look from the Fall 2024 Prada collection, as chosen for the occasion by stylist Julia Sarr-Jamois.

“I love the colors, reminds me of the 2000s covers,” pointed out kokobombon.

“I love it, reminds me of old good Vogue Nippon times,” fangora chimed in.

“Honestly I love it! There’s energy – so sick of these drab boring SAD covers. This, at least, has a little POP!” voiced forum member RMDV.

“Loving it too! I love the color composition and Lulu Tenney’s pose! Her gaze is also serene but not bland at all. A real model!” Ihhbl declared.

Sharing the same enthusiasm was vogue28: “Mad for Lulu Tenney lately, so to see her on the cover of Vogue is much-welcomed. Also transported back to those Vogue Nippon covers with the white backgrounds upon seeing this. Love the colors, the pose, and minimal art direction!”

“I love the color combo, very Kanroji. It’s so refreshing!” favored oaklee91.

Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, editions of Vogue from across the globe are starting to hype us up for the international multi-sport event (set to run July 26 until August 11). Anna Wintour is rooting for Sha’Carri Richardson, welcoming the American track and field sprinter onto the magazine’s latest digital offering. Across the pond, we’ve now got British Vogue‘s Chioma Nnadi endorsing Katarina Johnson-Thompson. The unveiling of the publication’s digital edition for August 2024 sees Team GB’s heptathlete and indoor pentathlete pose for photographer Delali Ayivi. Against a green backdrop, Johnson-Thompson is dressed by stylist Julia Sarr-Jamois in a top and shorts from the Nike x Jacquemus collab.

“Why?” simply asked a disinterested mepps the moment the cover dropped.

“Terrible,” Lola701 described.

Forum member Ihhbl used the word “hideous” toward the cover.

“I’m at a loss. I guess photographers don’t even have to care about lighting anymore,” LastNight chimed in.

“That Jacquemus look is a joke,” laughed Kite.

In complete agreement was vogue28, commenting: “The lighting from Delali Ayivi is truly hideous, and that Nike x Jacquemus look is indeed an eyesore!”

“I like what she’s wearing. The problem is that the background don’t match the dark harsh lighting of the picture,” Alquimista defended.

US Vogue 'Digital Edition' August 2024 : Sha’Carri Richardson by Luis Alberto Rodrigez

Anna Wintour has been at the helm of American Vogue for almost four whole decades. Throughout that time, we’ve most definitely encountered personalities from the world of sport as cover stars. Everyone from LeBron James and Ashton Eaton to Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles have become Vogue cover stars during Wintour’s tenure. Serena Williams has graced the American fashion bible four times, and we will never forget the Marion Jones cover from 2001. More recently, Wintour endorsed Coco Gauff and Sha’Carri Richardson is unveiled as Vogue‘s digital cover subject for August 2024. Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the American track and field sprinter poses for photographer Luis Alberto Rodriguez down on the starting line. In the striking cover image, Richardson is styled by Julia Sarr-Jamois in a bodysuit and billowing skirt from Ralph Lauren collection, teamed with a pair of gold Nike sneakers.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“It’s hideous,” immediately called out mepps.

“American Vogue has always struggled to create decent covers with black athletes. Not a flattering shot at all,” said forum member thiago.

“I just want a break from the athletes and obvious Anna Wintour favs. PLEASE!” declared tomtakesphotos.

Also quick to question Vogue‘s latest was KoV. “The cover photo to me looks like it could be on a billboard for Nike or Gatorade or something. It’s a dynamic image, but I don’t think it’s a Vogue cover.”

MModa, however, could not have disagreed more. “I love everything about the cover. Love the colors,” they admired.

Lola701 shared the same positive attitude, commenting: “I like the cover. It works for a digital cover and it goes well with the Olympics. The composition is really the strength of the cover.”

UK Vogue August 2024 : Suki Waterhouse by Colin Dodgson

Chioma Nnadi is a whole five issues deep into her tenure as British Vogue‘s head of editorial content. It’s safe to say the buzz, spark and excitement Edward Enninful‘s Vogue generated is a officially a thing of the past. Thus far, covers under Nnadi’s direction with FKA Twigs, Zendaya, Sophie Turner and Mona Tougaard (posing alongside Central Cee) have been declared a tremendous FLOP. Up next on the magazine’s front cover is Suki Waterhouse. For August 2024, the British model, actress and singer makes a return to the British fashion bible nine years after her last (when posing alongside fellow Brit it-girls Georgia May Jagger and Cara Delevingne). À la Naomi Campbell, Suki cradles her newborn baby daughter in the charming cover portrait, lensed by Colin Dodgson. On location in Los Angeles, within the surroundings of luscious gardens, Julia Sarr-Jamois dressed Suki in a fringed coat from Matthieu Blazy’s Fall 2024 Bottega Veneta collection.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“God this magazine is the pits,” voiced Kite the moment the cover struck.

“I’m so incredibly bored of this concept. A million times over, all incredibly dull and repetitive. Is this the best choice of a cover of an issue arriving at what should be the peak of summer?” asked honeycombchild.

“Uninspiring. It has been seen and done a million times,” Valentine27 echoed.

“Nothing says ‘summer’ like a giant coat,” Lucien112 laughed.

Also deeply underwhelmed was avonlea002. “Taking a good fashion photograph must really be something close to rocket science when one looks at the work Vogue publishes these days,” they shared.

“I did not think for one second that in 2024, we’d be getting a Suki Waterhouse cover of British Vogue. Again, not one redeeming feature to a cover from Chioma Nnadi. The photography from Colin Dodgson is awful. I hate that horrid yellow tinge, the composition, the cropping… the list goes on,” shared vogue28.

“Kinda surprised Suki Waterhouse booked this,” added thenewclassic.

UK Vogue November 2020 : Serena Williams by Zoe Ghertner

Edward Enninful is still on a mission splashing British Vogue‘s front covers with subjects who have never graced the magazine before. Lupita Nyong’o, Irina Shayk, Jodie Comer and Emma Corrin all made their debuts just this year. Now Enninful scores none other than Serena Williams. The three-time American Vogue cover star and Stuart Weitzman brand ambassador takes to the British fashion bible’s November 2020 installment posing for photographer Zoë Ghertner. The tennis ace dons a custom Nike x Off-White dress picked by Julia Sarr-Jamois for the fresh and inviting newsstand cover image.

“This is just so U.S. Vogue. Can Edward treat this as a British magazine for now at least before he gets Anna Wintour’s job?” commented Flamingjune the moment the cover dropped.

“I thought this was U.S. Vogue and it could’ve been shot by Annie Leibovitz,” KateTheGreatest chimed in.

“We already have an American Vogue Edward and trust us, we don’t need another,” stated A.D.C.

KINGofVERSAILLES wasn’t jumping for joy, either. “The cropping, the way her eyes look nearly closed, the hairstyle and the overabundance of summery white on a November issue are all not quite working for me.”

“Not Vogue enough, this basic image belongs on SELF,” MDNA pointed out.

“Zoë Ghertner’s photography here is naff and all I want to do is tilt and shift the cover image because the cropping is awful. I guess I can appreciate the cover for its minimalism — and nothing else. Overall, the cover is indeed very American Vogue and offers nothing new,” voiced vogue28.

But not everyone shared the same sentiment. “I love it, the minimalism and the slight touch of red look very classic. It’s also nice to see a softer side to Serena…” admired Urban Stylin.

“That’s a beautiful cover,” agreed crmsnsnwflks.
