This should’ve been a given, right? 70.7% of the votes! One of the most prolific, most viral, and most spectacular fashion shows in recent memory. Back in January, forum member sanssoleil declared: “This brought me back to life after having a really tough time lately. Fashion is back!” Congratulations to the house of Maison Margiela – and John Galliano.

The industry’s game of musical chairs continues. The year 2024 has brought us a handful of internet-breaking moments, including Virginie Viard parting ways with Chanel, Alessandro Michele taking up the mantle at Valentino, Kim Jones leaving Fendi, and Julian Klausner becoming creative director of Dries Van Noten. The latest to rock the world of fashion is John Galliano exiting Maison Margiela. It was back in January that Galliano presented the masterful Spring 2024 Maison Margiela Artisanal collection at the end of Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week. The viral and spectacular showcase has ultimately become Galliano’s swansong collection. Galliano was appointed creative director of Maison Margiela in 2014, following his exit from Christian Dior in 2011. The celebrated British designer will be leaving subsequent to a 10-year stint, while Galliano’s plans for the future remain unknown.

Revisit the Maison Margiela Artisanal Spring 2024 show:

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Off to somewhere, no?” [Kimihiro]

“Before y’all start screaming Dior. I encourage you revisit some of those threads towards the end of his tenure there. He had nothing left to contribute to Dior then and doubt anything has changed. Wonder what his next move will be? It would be nice for him to consult somewhere like he did with Oscar de la Renta.” [reese06]

“I think the best outcome would be if Galliano somehow managed to regain control of the Galliano brand. I don’t want to go back to Dior (or similar). He wouldn’t be able to handle the commercial demands of today’s landscape.” [Marc10]

“Galliano would do well at his own brand, doing clothes for his fans. I don’t think his mind/body can play the big brand game anymore.” [Alquimista]

“And now I wonder what would have happened if that January collection never became viral…” [Lola701]

“‘When the time is right, all we be revealed’. Sounds like something big is around the corner…” [Monsieur Cristobal]

“Fingers crossed this statement will live up to the hype it’s giving!! Do not want to be let down!!” [mteb123]

It has become somewhat of a tradition for us here at theFashionSpot to throw it back a whole decade, on the eve of each fashion week. You’ve encountered our New York, London and Milan installments and now it’s time to head back to the Spring 2015 season of Paris Fashion Week.

Sarah Burton was the creative force behind Alexander McQueen in the September of 2014, offering up a collection based on her very own treasured collection of antique kimonos and intricate fabric swatches. Cropped jackets and asymmetrical mini skirts had a rock ‘n’ roll sensibility at Anthony Vaccarello’s showcase and a sporty vibe oozed from Alexander Wang’s monochromatic Balenciaga collection. Riccardo Tisci sent out a gang of his model muses decked out into corsets, leather pants and thigh-high boots at Givenchy. Simon Porte Jacquemus transformed his runway into a beach scene, complete with parasols, deck chairs and the sound of waves crashing for his Spring 2015 nautical-inspired collection. Hedi Slimane continued to display his love for all-things glam rock at Saint Laurent while the late Karl Lagerfeld staged a protest at the Chanel show, complete with models (like Cara Delevingne and Gisele Bundchen) shouting through megaphones.

The year 2024 is proving to be somewhat memorable for fashion. At least in terms of designers and they fashion houses they serve. Over recent months, we’ve bared witness to Virginie Viard‘s abrupt Chanel exit and Peter Hawkings’ shock departure from Tom Ford (after less than twelve months). Not to mention Pierpaolo Piccioli leaving Valentino and Alessandro Michele replacing him. Thrown into the rumor mill, along with the Hedi Slimane exiting Celine, is John Galliano’s future at Maison Margiela.

The revered and widely-celebrated British designer is said to be set to end his 10-year tenure at the Paris-based fashion house this fall, sending the fashion world (and our forums) into a frenzy. The Central Saint Martins graduate was appointed creative director of Maison Margiela in 2014 and back in January, presented his otherworldly, instantly-viral and utterly spectacular Spring 2024 Maison Margiela Artisanal showcase underneath Paris’ Pont Alexandre III bridge.

According to multiple sources, Galliano could either make a remarkable return to Christian Dior (to which he served as creative director from 1996 until his firing for antisemitism in 2011), replace Kim Jones at Fendi or revive his own namesake fashion label with the help from the suits at LVMH – his former employer.

The suspense for any official announcements is truly killing us!

Revisit the Maison Margiela Artisanal Spring 2024 collection below:

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“I feel that if Galliano goes back to Dior, it could mark a huge shift in the industry.” [LadyJunon]

“I hope it’s not true. If it is, Anna Wintour better be ready for another drunken outburst by John in the near future. 2024 fashion system will chew Galliano up and spit him out.” [avonlea002]

“Ohh. I pray to GOD this is true!” [Scotty]

“As long as he don’t put his hands on Chanel, it’s fine. Chanel should be a house for forward thinking vision.” [Alquimista]

“I love John Galliano, but going back to Dior could be his biggest mistake ever. I just hope he goes back to his own brand only, so he could be free to create whatever the hell he wants (without having to chase another designer DNA).” [jeanclaude]

“I do hope John isn’t about to return to Dior. The workload and pressure would be worse now than in 2011. Fendi though? I can see it.” [Druscilla_]

“Fendi would be such a strange strategy. John’s work is so British and so French. Never once in his career did John Galliano’s work every feel Italian.” [lookatme]

“All gods of fashion, please let it be his own brand!” [Olaffo]

“Galliano doing haute couture at his own label with some solid LVMH could either be a fresh burst of creativity or stale regurgitations from the past. Either way, I am here for him getting his label back. I truly hope it happens!” [Salvatore]

It was the show that broke the internet during the Spring 2024 season of Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week back in January. John Galliano’s wondrous spectacle for Maison Margiela Artisanal was one of those moments that will go down in fashion history and will forever be etched in our memories. “Pure Galliano quintessence! Fashion with a capital F!” raved theFashionSpot forum member GivenchyAddict upon checking out the collection and we simply could not have agreed more – still.

Vogue is keeping the momentum of Galliano’s show well and truly alive, having released a 12-minute video of designer John Galliano, actresses Gwendoline Christie and makeup artist extraordinaire Pat McGrath discussing the viral fashion moment. Throughout the awe-inspiring video, the trio take us through the creation of Galliano’s magnificent collection, including the insane level of dress-making and art of corestry inside the Maison Margiela atelier. The total must-watch of a video also shines a spotlight upon the idea behind the staged set lighting underneath Paris’ historic Pont Alexandre III bridge and McGrath’s viral glass-skin look.

Everyone loves a flashback, right? Here at theFashionSpot, ahead of us descending upon each fashion capital, we’ve been flashing it back a whole decade to the Fall 2014 season of New York, London, Milan and now Paris Fashion Week.

Just like in the other cities, the fashion landscape was a whole lot different within the French capital. Raf Simons was the creative force behind Christian Dior, Hedi Slimane was heading up Saint Laurent, Riccardo Tisci was still proving every inch his worth at Givenchy and Alexander Wang presented his third mainline collection for Balenciaga while the much-loved Phoebe Philo was still winning us over at Celine.

John Galliano’s eponymous label was a fixture on the PFW schedule (designed by Bill Gaytten), as was Haider Ackermann whose collection showcased the strength of the Colombian-born French designer’s innate design talent and impeccable skill. Anthony Vaccarello’s very own namesake creations were on full display too. The Fall 2014 season also bestowed upon us the late Karl Lagerfeld’s unforgettable supermarket spectacle at Chanel and Sarah Burton’s Alexander McQueen collection felt like a magical and mythological fairytale was coming to life before our very eyes.

If you’ve visited theFashionSpot’s forums or had access to social media over the past 24 hours, you’re no doubt fully aware of John Galliano latest showcase for Maison Margiela Artisanal took place – sending the fashion pack into an immediate frenzy. The celebrated British designer’s latest closed out Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week Spring 2024 with an absolute bang – managing to reduce a select few our forum members to tears.

On Thursday evening, Galliano invited guests underneath Paris’ Pont Alexandre III bridge, located on the left bank of the French capital Transported to a bygone era the likes of Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner were soon sat perched on bentwood chairs, witnessing a feast for the eyes while completely immersed within the atmosphere of a makeshift Belle Epoque brasserie. As the live performance from gospel singers began to fill the air, Galliano’s cast of models soon emerged from backstage to unveil his latest Margiela marvel of aggressively cinched waists and voluminous hips, covering the body in lace and gauze to great effect. Each model morphed into a stylized character and broke the fourth wall, staring at the audience to inflict upon them a fashion experience to remember.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“I was absolutely moved to tears, we haven’t seen or experienced anything like this in eons. And, God, is fashion hungry for this. This almost feels like a swansong collection, or at least a culmination of the narrative he’s been weaving these last few years. I’m just lost for any intelligent words right now.” [Mr-Dale]

“I’m still processing and I’m gonna write something proper later but THIS IS AMAZING. FASHION WITH A f*cking CAPITAL F.” [helmutnotdead]

“John Galliano is well and truly in a league of his own. Currently sat watching the live-stream in absolute awe and I’m not even the biggest Galliano stan but I am able to recognize the sheer brilliance of this level of work. The storytelling, the sense of drama, the fantasy, the artistry, the execution… so unbelievably insane.” [vogue28]

“This brought me back to life after having a really tough time lately. Fashion is back!” [sanssoleil]

“God. What a show. Not one collection in the past 10 years in which I actively consumed current fashion media has made me feel such strong emotion or ignite such love for fashion, as this collection did. The clothing is beautiful. So many outstanding garments stayed clearly in my mind, something I don’t experience often when viewing new collections. The shapes and proportions are obviously the most eye catching elements on the initial viewing. Quite spectacular corseting!” [aracic]

“FINALLY! Drama, theater, excess, darkness. I don’t care about Margiela, I want to see Galliano like in his glory days. I’m glad to see his confidence is back.” [FelipeV]

“Pure Galliano quintessence! Fashion with a capital F!” [GivenchyAddict]

That’s a wrap for fashion month now that Paris Fashion Week has come to a close — and what a week it has been! To get us in the mood, Maria Grazia Chiuri kicked us off with a modern dance performance at Christian Dior and to close us out, Karl Lagerfeld took us sur la plage with a makeshift beach complete with azure blue skies and lapping waves right in the middle of the Grand Palais for Chanel.

Throughout the week, our forums have witnessed Alessandro Michele take over the French capital for Gucci while Jane Birkin serenaded front row attendees. We’ve also seen Rei Kawakubo go back to basics with Comme des Garcons, Demna Gvasalia paying a respectful tribute to Cristóbal Balenciaga and watched in amazement as models walked on water at Saint Laurent before a twinkling Eiffel Tower at dusk. Isabel Marant went OTT with the 80s inspo and Hedi Slimane released a predictable debut collection for Celine.

Here are theFashionSpot’s hits and misses of Paris Fashion Week’s Spring 2019 season, according to our unfiltered and no-holds-barred forum members. (Because who needs the likes of Suzy Menkes, Tim Blanks and Cathy Horyn, right?) This season has been a roller coaster and we don’t want to get off. Until next season…
