As editor-in-chief of Vogue Scandinavia, Martina Bonnier has championed a whole plethora of homegrown talent as cover stars. The title serving Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Iceland has welcomed the likes of Vilma Sjöberg, Björk, and Rebecca Ferguson onto covers over recent months. Bonnier secures royalty for the cover of Vogue Scandinavia to close out 2024 and start 2025 on a high, with none other than Princess Sofia of Sweden becoming a cover subject. The Swedish royal (married to Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland) poses for photographer Hasse Nielsen. In the cover photograph, the Duchess of Värmland glances over her shoulder dressed in a navy blue creation from Swedish designer Camilla Thulin.

“Who said that this font is beautiful for them to keep using it over and over again?” asked DK92.

“Should have given the cover to Prince Carl Philip,” forum member marsnoop2 exclaimed.

“Oh Sweden! The country where everyone lives in a shed and Princesses wear gowns to go fetch. The cropping made Princess Sofia of Sweden look like she is 4’6,” shrieked WAVES.

Jeremydante commented: “Ditch the cabin, give us parts of the palace. Gorgeous girl though!”

“Not the strongest and most beautiful cover of Vogue I’ve come across with royalty. However, I don’t hate it,” voiced vogue28. “The cover itself is easy on the eye, the coloring is lovely and I like the navy blue ball grown amongst the wilderness.”

Since Vogue Scandinavia came to fruition in 2021, the magazine has been a champion for homegrown talent. Editor-in-chief Martina Bonnier has supported talent within the subregion of Northern Europe, with everyone from music icon Björk to Vilma Sjöberg fronting the publication throughout 2024. Bonnier welcomes Giovanna Engelbert as a Vogue Scandinavia cover star for October/November 2024. The Italian-born, Stockholm-based fashion powerhouse (who has served as Swarovski creative director since 2020) poses for photographer Marcus Ohlsson. In the cover shot, Engelbert is dressed by stylist Maria Barsoum in an embellished Louis Vuitton look from Nicolas Ghesquiere’s 10-year Fall 2024 collection. Naturally, of course, Giovanna dons jewelry from Swarovski for the occasion, with Carl Milles’ Playing Angels sculptures looming in the background.

Vogue Scandinavia just goes down and down, lower and lower. Probably this is their worst cover ever,” immediately said BalkaniStaCouture.

“What the hell is that font?” asked EDEN21.

“I thought the Scandinavians were the masters of quiet taste? Is this an AI-generated cover?” quizzed forum member Deleted Member 1957.

“They need to fire that digital retoucher,” stated a disapproving Xone.

Also far from impressed was blueorchid. “What goes through these people’s minds when they approve this slop? ‘Ahhh yes, genius… our customers will LOVE this! It will FLY off of the shelves!'” they laughed.

“This just looks like one of those travel agent advertisements,” noted 0st3nd.

To say Lily Collins has been a constant sight down at the newsstand over recent months, would be an understatement. After all, the English-American actress has taken to the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Thailand, Harper’s Bazaar Australia & New Zealand, and ELLE France. Lily Collins’ latest undertaking is fronting the double August/September edition of Vogue Scandinavia (the magazine’s first non-Nordic cover subject). The Emily in Paris star takes Paris in the cover photograph, shot high above the Parisian rooftops with the Arc de Triomphe looming in the background. Collins gazes down the lens of the photographer Desiree Mattsson in the cover shot, posing on the balcony of the Hotel Castille Paris, styled by Shaquille Ross-Williams wearing Schiaparelli and Cartier jewelry.

“How many covers will Netflix, Cartier, or whoever buy every time there’s a new season of Emily In Paris? I’m exhausted. By the way… Photoshop disaster!” exclaimed DK92.

“I know everything gets accused of looking AI generated these days, but to me this *really* does,” KoV chimed in.

“Is this just a Paris background?” asked forum member Xone.

Also quick to mention the apparent post-production was Bertrando3. “It’s WAY TOO RETOUCHED. My gosh, and Vogue agreed on that shot?” they questioned.

Harper’s Bazaar Thailand won the Lily Collins cover battle, IMO. I don’t mind the sight of this, but the lighting and coloring is indeed dreadful and rather unflattering. It all just feels so… cold and uninviting,” voiced an underwhelmed vogue28.

Here at theFashionSpot, we’re always down for fresh and unexpected faces greeting us down at the newsstand. Vogue Scandinavia receives said memo loud and clear with the unveiling of its June/July offering as Rebecca Ferguson becomes cover star. Scandinavian Vogue has now been on the market for almost three whole years, and received a standing ovation back in April, when Martina Bonnier gave the living legend that is Björk the cover. For June/July 2024, Bonnier continues to champion talent from The Nordic Region as Rebecca Ferguson poses for photographer Marcus Ohlsson. Captured on location within the Stockholm archipelago, the Swedish actress gazes down Ohlsson’s lens covered in a fishing net which makes for a somewhat unconventional cover.

“If the intention was to camouflage her face, big slaaaay,” voiced ReneSanchez.

“This is so corny. ‘The Big Catch’ cover line and Rebecca Ferguson’s face under the net. Embarrassing,” avonlea002 called out.

Forum member upNorth even went as far as to state: “OK, I think this is the worst Vogue cover I’ve ever seen!”

“I have always wondered how a model or celebrity that does not have many magazine covers feel when they get finally get a cover that barely shows their face. It must be embarrassing,” shared Srdjan.

“I love Rebecca Ferguson, but the cover is a disappointment,” sighed Ivancica.

“Scandinavian Vogue is so odd to me. Those countries have such beautiful design in furniture, architecture, and general aesthetics, yet their Vogue is so pedestrian,” chimed in NYLA22.

Vogue Scandinavia April/May 2024 : Björk by Vidar Logi

Vogue Scandinavia continues to go from strength to strength. Ever since the magazine first came to fruition with the unveiling of its debut issue back in 2021, editor Martina Bonnier is seemingly making it her mission to morph the magazine into one of the best in the business (and is succeeding). Bonnier brilliantly invites Björk as Scandinavian Vogue‘s cover star for April/May 2024 – the iconic Icelandic singer-songwriter’s very first (unbelievable, we know). Shot by Vidar Logi and with Edda Gudmundsdottir on styling duties, Björk showcases a look from the internet-breaking Maison Margiela Artisanal show from the Spring 2024 season of Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week in the visually-arresting and intriguing cover shot.

“Gorgeous! A true fashion icon,” forum member Snejana Onopka heralded.

Also equally as impressed was oaklee91, commenting: “Major! What a surprise!”

“Björk in Galliano is like a dream come true. Amazing!” enthused Kishan.

“Incredible. Oddly ethereal. Sublime. Björk’s visuals are almost always top tier and this is no different,” chimed in TerraVera.

“The fact this is her first Vogue cover is insane,” expressed upNorth in amazement.

Ivano shared the same sentiments: “First time I see Björk in front of the Vogue logo. It took 30 years!”

Vogue Scandinavia has undoubtedly carved a niche out for themselves, ever since the inaugural issue was unveiled with Greta Thunberg back in 2021. Under the tutelage of Martina Bonnier, homegrown talent continues to be displayed via the magazine’s front covers, with cover stars having included the likes of Malaika Holmén, Elsa Hosk, Alicia Vikander, Tove Lo and Pernille Teisbaek. Bonnier’s latest cover accomplishment involves welcoming Vilma Sjöberg as cover star for February/March 2024. The Swedish catwalk queen who just walked the major shows of Helmut Lang, Altuzarra and Carolina Herrera during New York Fashion Week poses with an adorable, cute and cuddly feline companion in the charming cover image. Captured by Camilla Akrans and styled by Maria Barsoum, Vilma is dressed in an embellished dress from Sabato De Sarno’s debut Gucci collection for Spring 2024.

“Are we back in lockdown or is there something I don’t know?” immediately asked Urban Stylin.

“A model like Sasha Pivovarova could’ve pulled this off ” chimed in Scotty.

Valentine27 voiced: “I would have liked to see more of the dress and less of this (big) cat. The color of the dress seems to suit the overall tone and it’s a pity it’s not visible enough.”

“I love Vilma and I think the cover is okay. However, the photography is weird. Camilla Akrans was great during the 00s with her minimal glamour, but this is not working. Looks like a photography student experimenting,” dontbeadrag critiqued.

Nevertheless, not everyone felt the same way. “LOVE, LOVE Camilla Akrans!” forum member Gonzalo defended.

“One of their better covers,” appreciated oaklee91. “I happen to like it, it’s light and the cat is a very cute addition.”

“The lighting and coloring is indeed lovely, and while this doesn’t exactly rock my world, it’s beautiful and easy enough on that the eye that I cannot complain,” enthused vogue28.

Vogue Scandinavia June/July 2022 : Alicia Vikander by Thomas Cristiani

Alicia Vikander doesn’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to the covers of our favorite fashion glossies. With the exception of British Harper’s Bazaar and American Vogue, most magazines (British ELLE, Vanity Fair, Porter and Vogue Japan) fail miserably to profile the Swedish actress. That didn’t stop Vogue Scandinavia from asking her to cover its June/July 2022 issue, however. Photographed by Thomas Cristiani with styling from Victoria Sekrier, the Louis Vuitton brand ambassador naturally wears a silk embroidered dress from the French fashion house’s Spring 2022 collection.

As expected, Alicia’s latest Vogue cover is a total flop. “The Enigma of Alicia Vikander? She’s an enigma now? I guess that’s one way to spin it,” declared dfl-001.

“The enigma is in fact when we’ll see her shine on a print magazine…” Xone pointed out.

“Is she melting? Looks like a costume party and she showed up as a mop. One of the worst Vikander covers and that’s saying a lot since they’re all bad. How does she keep booking these covers? Does she move much Louis Vuitton product? True mystery,” added zoom.

Bertrando3 isn’t impressed: “This woman will NEVER be able to look good on a magazine cover, she’s bland and doesn’t know how to pose or give anything…”

“Alicia Vikander appears to just shut down and shows zero signs of life whenever a camera is put in front of her, which I continue to find baffling. She’s dressed in a truly hideous Vuitton getup, the angle is shockingly bad and the lank posing is horrific,” echoed vogue28.

“The fact that this is a Vogue cover…” remarked Urban Stylin.

Vogue Scandinavia October/November 2021 : Helena Christensen by Henrik Bülow

Everything feels right in the world when supermodels grace our favorite fashion glossies. Whether it’s Kate Moss guest editing Self Service or Amber Valletta and family fronting Vogue Germany, we always approve. Now Vogue Scandinavia bestows upon us modeling legend Helena Christensen for October/November 2021 marking her 18th Vogue cover appearance. For the magazine’s second outing, the Danish beauty is captured down at the beach on a blustery day wearing a Burberry shirt and a vintage textile selected by Camilla Larsson for the image shot by Henrik Bülow.

According to most of our forum members, however, Helena deserved better. “Dreadful and depressing. This may be one of the worst Vogue covers I have seen…” declared dontbeadrag.

“One of her worst covers, poor Helena…” agreed an absolutely disappointed VogueGirl8910.

Bertrando3 wasn’t feeling the outcome, either. “She looks so depressed…”

“With all the accomplished Scandinavian photographers that they could have worked with, this is who they chose for their second issue?” a clearly unforgiving PowerDroid chimed in.

“Is she stoned or what? And I didn’t know either that there’s a Scandinavian edition of Vogue,” said cottonmouth13.

“This magazine should’ve happened 20 years ago maybe. When you had Mikael Jansson shooting for Stockholm New, a young Camilla Åkrans starting to make waves, Sølve Sundsbø a star on the rise and Scandinavian fashion and design had a strong upward trend in general,” myran pointed out.

But not everyone felt the same way. “It’s wonderful to see Helena Christensen — regardless of the outcome. I happen to think this is rather beautiful and very atmospheric, can almost feel the cold weather and strong winds. No complaints over this!” raved vogue28.

Vogue Scandinavia August/September 2021 : Greta Thunberg by Alexandrov Klum

Editors across the globe are leaving their Vogue posts left and right. But Vogue Scandinavia has still managed to successfully come to fruition. After it was announced that the Scandinavian version would hit the market back in July 2020, we’ve been wondering who would be featured on its inaugural issue. Now Greta Thunberg appears as the mag’s first-ever cover star with the environmental activist taking to the publication’s August/September 2021 issue. Captured by Alexandrov Klum and styled by Konca Aykan, Greta naturally poses outside in the Swedish wilderness for the absolutely tranquil cover image.

The cover clearly divided our forums, however. “That’s actually quite lovely, I feel like I’ve never seen her photographed editorially like this. I find it refreshing and so much more interesting,” admired KINGofVERSAILLES.

“It’s not wow enough for a debut cover, but it’s still nice. It looks like a cover of a fairy-tale book. I’m glad that they gave her the fashion treatment,” added THD96.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“The fairy-tale approach works, but it screams too G-rated for me. She’s 18 now and this looks as if they’re trying to make her appeal to 5- to 10-year-olds,” critiqued an obviously annoyed Ken Doll Jenner.

Benn98 certainly wasn’t jumping for joy: “Everything about the cover is so cliché. Greta in nature with animals and wearing gentle pastel-colored fabrics.”

“Looks like a cover of Vogue Enfants or a Disney advertisement,” disapproved a definitely disappointed VogueGirl8910.

Vogue Disney come through! I do like this. Much better activist cover than that Malala Yousafzai cover Edward Enninful put out,” noted dontbeadrag.

“Considering who the subject is, I was bracing myself for something infinitely more pretentious…a quiet mystical Scandinavian fantasy is a relief…” voiced YohjiAddict.
