Interview might not hit like it once used to but that doesn’t stop Mel Ottenberg from securing a plethora of A-list talent for the magazine’s front covers. For recent issues, Ottenberg (who was appointed editor-in-chief in 2021) has dropped the likes of Rihanna, Demi Moore, and Jennifer Lopez as cover stars. Making an appearance on the cover of Interview for Issue #558 Winter 2024/25 is Lily-Rose Depp. The French-American actress teams up with photographer Richard Kern for the occasion, complete with Mel Ottenberg himself reporting for styling duties. The Chanel brand ambassador and star of Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” gazes down Kern’s lens, trimming the bushes of a Los Angeles boulevard in the unconventional cover image, sporting a knitted top from Loro Piana.

“Terrible, just as I was expecting…” voiced kokobombon.

“Each and every one of the movie stills I’ve seen so far delivered a more impactful visual experience than this cover,” a majorly underwhelmed aracic chimed in.

“I keep trying to like Lily-Rose Depp because I am a fan of her mother, but god, she shows up everywhere with this ‘do you know who my parents are’ energy and no effort whatsoever,” VanillaCrush critiqued.

“Can she for once change that stupid facial expression and stop acting like everything she is doing at the moment is beneath her?” asked avonlea002.

WAVES commented: “That’s downright bad and Lily can photograph better than that!”

Interview September 2024 : Demi Moore by Petra Collins

Interview is still one of those magazines that garners the attention of everyone here at theFashionSpot. The praise goes to Mel Ottenberg, who was named editor-in-chief of Interview in 2021. Ottenberg has created a whole lot of buzz for the title throughout 2024 alone, having welcomed the likes of Bad Bunny, Rihanna and Billie Eilish as cover stars. Added to the list with the unveiling of the September 2024 edition is none other than Demi Moore. The American actress makes a return to the cover, a whole 28-years after her last in 1996 (when this posed for Ellen von Unwerth). This time around, Demi Moore collabs with photographer Petra Collins and in the striking Interview cover photograph, is shot behind a chain link fence, wearing a look from Matthieu Blazy’s Fall 2024 Bottega Venetta collection (as selected by Ottenberg himself).

“This is a strong cover – certainly by Interview‘s recent standards,” applauded KoV.

“If she was holding onto the railing and had a stronger expression, the result would be better!” chimed in forum member DK92.

Jeremydante felt the same way, exclaiming: “Wanted this to be better!”

“I like the cover, just wish it was cropped a little up to avoid making Demi look short. They could have done more, Demi Moore is a very photogenic woman,” said Urban Stylin.

“My love for Demi Moore overrides the fact this indeed could’ve been better. On a positive note, I love the red, the chain link fence, the fact it’s Demi Moore,” vogue28 enthused.

“I like it but then I like Petra Collins’ stuff in general. She’s one of the few younger photographers with a recognizable and distinct POV,” admired Drusilla.

Interview Spring 2024 : Rihanna by Nadia Lee Cohen
IMAGE | INTERVIEWMAGAZINE.COM

Should you regularly pay your local newsstand a visit, just like us here at theFashionSpot, you have no doubt become fairly used to the sight of Rihanna. The Barbadian songstress (who happens to be the second-best-selling female music artist of all time) has graced the covers of multiple editions of Vogue from across the global (often on more than one occasion) and is a regular fixture on magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and Allure. Interview Magazine welcomes the beauty mogul back as cover star with the unveiling of the Spring 2024 issue, having appeared on the cutting-edge publication twice prior. Almost a whole five years after her last, the founder of Fenty Beauty can be found posing for photographer Nadia Lee Cohen in the striking cover photograph. Dressed by the magazine’s editor-in-chief Mel Ottenberg, Rihanna wears a white shirt from Christian Dior, bra top from Savage X Fenty and custom hat from Sarah Sokol Millinery.

“This is awful, but acceptable for Interview somehow,” voiced blueorchid.

“Not liking it,” said oaklee91.

“The worst she’s ever looked! Rihanna can absolutely model and has proven it many times over, but this ain’t it,” chimed in an underwhelmed marsnoop2.

Yet not everyone, however, was so displeased with Interview‘s latest. “I think Mel Ottenberg’s Interview and Nadia Lee Cohen are a match made in heaven. They share a similar kitschy campy sense of humor and this works for that reason,” praised WinstonH20.

“This is the best cover Mel Ottenberg has produced since he was appointed. Nadia behind the lens, Yadim behind the beat… #obsessed,” enthused fenty.

“I like this. The coloring here is lovely and I love the beauty look on Rihanna. I’m unable to recall a single Interview cover in recent memory but I think I’ll remember this,” shared vogue28.

Kylie Jenner’s fashion industry takeover remains in full effect. In the past two months alone, we’ve bared witness to the American social media personality turned self-made business mogul start a new fashion venture in the form of Khy and front WSJ. Magazine. Not to mention throughout 2023, Kylie has graced the cover of Vanity Fair Italia and fronted campaigns for Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier and Acne Studios. Mel Ottenberg welcomes Kylie as Interview’s latest cover star for Winter 2023, who poses via the lens of photographer Theo Liu for the occasion. In the intriguing and creative(?) cover image styled by Ottenberg himself, Kylie rocks a head-to-toe look from Celine by Hedi Slimane.

Per usual, members of theFashionSpot forums had a lot to say about Kylie’s latest. “Andy [Warhol], I can only mourn for you…” voiced DK92, suggesting the cover wasn’t worthy of praise.

“What is going on?” shrieked oaklee91.

Kimy Jo declared: “Kylie takes better selfies than this!”

Also far from impressed was forum member vogue28: “I honestly don’t mind the sight of Kylie Jenner but that’s one unattractive magazine cover! A far cry from the fabulousness that she delivered on Vanity Fair Italia by Luigi & Iango.”

“Exactly this,” replied KoV in agreement. “I remember one of Glenda Bailey’s last issues of Harper’s Bazaar, pre-Covid, was Kylie in Marie Antoinette mode and I loved it. Nothing she’s done in the nearly 4 years since has matched it!”

Vogue Italia October 2020 : Justin & Hailey Bieber by Eli Russell Linnetz

Emanuele Farneti definitely loves a good gimmick when it comes to Vogue Italia. But at least the magazine is far from predictable. Farneti throws us a total curveball this month following a whopping 100 covers for September, covers drawn by children and a totally blank cover in response to the global health crisis. Justin and Hailey Bieber take to Italian Vogue for October 2020 with the married couple sharing an embrace on a bed of silk sheets snapped by photographer Eli Russell Linnetz. Styled by Mel Ottenberg, the pair wears pieces from Anthony Vaccarello’s seductive Saint Laurent Fall 2020 collection while paying homage to legendary photographer Helmut Newton.

Our forum members weren’t fans of the outcome, however. “Helmut Newton is writhing in his grave right now,” said jorgepalomo.

“They are celebrating Helmut Newton’s 100th birthday with this cover? I can’t,” added mikel.

“It’s the quote that is offensive, the audacity to cite Helmut Newton and his lifelong WORKING partnership with his wife as somehow having something in common with this now mostly unemployed pair unless sharing a surname and who knows what else count as peak creative productivity in 2020,” tigerrouge called out.

“I don’t see what’s so special about the cover, it’s OK for Playboy or Rolling Stone, not for Vogue,” disapproved YohjiAddict.

But not everyone was left unimpressed. “As much as I hate the Biebers, the cover image itself is faultless to me. I wish I could hate it,” confessed TommysBaby.

RedSmokeRise felt the same way: “Despite how much I cringe every time I see them together, the cover image is pretty darn good.”

“Let’s be objective. This is not a terrible cover. This is not the Vogue Italia we all know and respect…” voiced GivenchyAddict.

Interview Spring 2020 : Selena Gomez by Eli Russell Linnetz

We’re all for magazines giving celebrities new looks and Interview gave Selena Gomez a makeover to mark her appearance on its Spring 2020 edition. Unlike Vogue, ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar and more recently WSJ. Magazine, Selena doesn’t look like herself on Interview‘s latest. In the stylized cover shot, the singer (who is about to bless us with a beauty line) wears a mix of Balenciaga, Vetements and Wolford selected by Mel Ottenberg before the lens of Eli Russell Linnetz.

Members of our forums could barely believe their eyes. “That’s Selena?” questioned dodencebt the moment the cover struck.

“Why did they make her look like Cardi B?” asked tipi1355.

Different doesn’t always mean better. “How did she (or, more importantly, her management) agree to this? Mind-blowing,” added [Piece Of Me].

MON felt the same way: “This Selena era has been terrible. The fact that she agreed to this…choices.”

“She looks like an influencer/YouTuber just starting out, not knowing her angles. I don’t think Selena’s team is managing these shoots. It’s more in line with what the magazine wants. The competition is also fierce so she can’t play that hardball anymore,” commented Benn98.

“Don’t like this at all! It’s weird to look at. This new era of Selena is confusing, I hope she really has found inner peace, but to me it looks more like she wants to convince herself of that rather than she really feels that,” declared a less-than-impressed apple.

Interview March 2020 : Jennifer Aniston by Alique

You’re no doubt used to seeing Jennifer Aniston styled a certain type of way whenever she graces the covers of our favorite fashion glossies (see recent covers of Harper’s Bazaar and InStyle for prime examples). Interview opted to take the American actress slightly out of her comfort zone for its March 2020 cover shoot with stunning results. Photographed by Alique and styled by Mel Ottenberg, Jennifer looks sensational wearing the Celine boots of the season, a black leather jacket (also from Celine) and Azzedine Alaïa briefs for the cover shot.

But something about the cover bugged a few of our forum members upon closer inspection. “It looked incredible until I zoomed in on the face…” said Marc10.

“Jennifer either doesn’t know how to pose or the people retouching her photos use the same preset. This is not the first time I’ve seen Jen make such strange facial expressions. Can’t someone help her?” asked a dumbfounded avonlea002.

“What a weird facial expression, she sadly looks Botoxed out of her mind. Her body is amazing though and face aside, this is a great cover and something different for Jen,” declared dodencebt.

Sharing the same sentiment was Miss Dalloway: “Yeah, she is making a strange face, but you know what? This is at least something different from her. There are famous women like Jennifer, Victoria Beckham or Gwyneth Paltrow that sell based on their very defined image and every time a magazine gets them to do anything out of the usual, it’s a win! This works for me!”

“I mean damnnnn if that doesn’t make you want to hit the gym. Wow! Great womanly styling, too. Killed it,” raved HeatherAnne.

“Despite the unflattering facial expression in the cover shot, I am ALL for this! Alique did a truly fabulous job here and the concept of ‘gritty glamour’ feels utterly refreshing for Jennifer Aniston (who we usually see all prim, proper and smiley on fashion magazine covers),” voiced vogue28.

Interview Summer 2019 : Rihanna by Pierre-Ange Carlotti

Whether she’s platinum blonde, sporting a bold makeup look for Harper’s Bazaar, channeling Queen Nefertiti on Vogue Arabia or becoming the first black woman to grace British Vogue‘s September issue, Rihanna is newsstand gold. Now the Fenty creative director is profiled like you’ve never seen her before, posing on a set of covers for Interview‘s Summer 2019 edition both shot by Pierre-Ange Carlotti. Styled by Mel Ottenberg, Rihanna goes incognito for cover one (below) wearing head-to-toe Saint Laurent and plays peekaboo on cover two (after the jump).

“Idiotic and the inside shots are just as bad, and vulgar! I mean it’s her ‘brand’, but she can be used so much better than this! Also anyone that works with this mag is shameful in my book,” ranted Miss Dalloway.

“The one magazine I actually wish would go bust! It’s preposterous that they’re not only allowed to operate, but that people still willingly shoot for them,” echoed Benn98.

“Pierre-Ange is such an awful photographer. I believe that to the core of my being, and will never understand his appeal and success. These pics aren’t the worst that he’s capable of, but they aren’t far off, either. Rihanna is Rihanna, so I can appreciate the cover, regardless of the lucha libre styling. Everything else is just cheap,” reasoned mepps.

But not everyone was disappointed. “I love this cover! It is so different and just doesn’t give a s**t about the typical and boring beauty standard,” praised Perickles.

“Gotta respect the fact they put such a strong and recognizable face as Rihanna on the cover, but hid it behind a mask,” noted aracic.

. Scratch that. The legendary publication has decided not to shut down as reported back in May and the newly unveiled relaunch issue is already available on newsstands now. To mark the occasion, the new team welcomes Agnès Varda — Andy Warhol’s very first cover star for the inaugural issue of the magazine back in 1969 — onto the retro September 2018 cover. Now 49 years later, the 90-year-old film director was photographed by Collier Schorr and styled by Mel Ottenberg wearing a bold Dries van Noten number.

Unfortunately, our forum members weren’t pining for the magazine’s comeback. “Stinks to high heaven! As for the actual cover, looks very vintage. Nondescript, if you ask me. And I’m guessing the choice to give the cover to Agnès over Hari [Nef] was a strategic one. Who would pester Agnès, who probably doesn’t even know about the entire affair, about her involvement with this mess?” voiced Benn98.

“I love Agnès. She’s a great artist and living legend. She’s better than this Frankenstein magazine and Collier Schorr. I’m still not buying it, and I doubt many others will either,” mepps added.

“Sometimes it is better to stop everything and let people have good memories… I was done with Interview the moment Fabien [Baron], Karl [Templer] and Ludivine [Poiblanc] left it,” wrote GivenchyAddict.

Miss Dalloway also won’t be rushing out to grab a copy. “Shame on them, and every single person who gets involved with the Brant family, and this magazine!” she said.

“She looks like a muppet. Is she part of Sesame Street? Why is this photographer everywhere?” asked Perickles.

“I’m so confused! Should I be happy or sad of this happening,” elle_gb wondered.

Actress Daisy Ridley continues to gain momentum in the fashion industry, having recently proven herself on the November cover of American Vogue. The Brit delivers the goods once again as she fronts V Magazine‘s elegant cover feature for Winter 2017. With a completely different look than the Vogue shoot, Daisy does ladylike glamour for a series of portraits shot by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin and styled by Mel Ottenberg. In the cover image, Daisy works a Louis Vuitton tuxedo jacket and a crisp white shirt teamed with a pair of jeans, flashing a perfect smile.

Unfortunately, the cover ultimately failed to make an impact in our forums. “I like the cute intentional cheesiness of the smile, the hand whipping the hair and her hand on her hip. Reminds me when Scarlett Johansson was photographed for V in moody femme fatale lighting and styling, and instead of the usual sexy scowl, she had big cheesy smiles,” commented t-rex upon checking out the cover.

“I like that they went for something different and someone new, but this looks very Glamour. Still, I’m glad for Daisy. Things are finally happening for her,” Benn98 added.

Also liking the outcome was dodencebt. “Much more natural and inviting than the US Vogue cover if you ask me, although it’s too artificially grainy,” he pointed out as discussion began to head south.

“Too casual for V Magazine,” voiced phungnam96.

GivenchyHomme echoed the same sentiments: “This looks like a Gap campaign. It’s wrong for a cover, especially for this title.”

“Her best cover so far. Maybe not mind-blowing (what is even close these days?), but she looks beautiful!” reasoned Fiercification.
