Vogue Japan October 2020 by Takashi Murakami

Due to the pandemic, we’ve been seeing an influx of illustrated covers. Vogue Spain asked Ignasi Monreal to design its May cover. Children from around the world created Vogue Italia’s June covers. And American Vogue‘s September issue features the work of Jordan Casteel and Kerry James Marshall. Following a sultry Kaia Gerber September offering, Vogue Japan jumps on the illustrated cover bandwagon. It commissioned Japanese artist Takashi Murakami (known for his iconic Louis Vuitton collab) to design its October 2020 cover.

But the cover clearly divided our forum members. “I hate how fashion has like five artists they feature and it’s the same five over and over again for decades now with no end in sight,” critiqued dior_couture1245.

“That looks like a grade school art project…” voiced crmsnsnwflks.

“Everything fashion industry-related in 2020 has been an absolute disaster. The covers have each been more tragic than the ones before,” MyNameIs chimed in.

On the other hand, the cover definitely found a few fans. “For some reason I don’t hate it. I think I just have this weird type of respect and affection for any type of Japanese animation/anime stemming from childhood,” said Fiercification.

“I like it! The choice of artist is a little bit too obvious for my taste, but it’s well-executed,” appreciated Lola701.

“Takashi Murakami is obviously the perfect candidate to illustrate the cover of Vogue Japan and while I’m not a Murakami admirer, I can appreciate the happiness and joy…” echoed vogue28.

“I can’t hate on Murakami…” confessed kokobombon.

There were three key pieces to every Karl Lagerfeld outfit: a low ponytail, sunglasses and a sophisticated white shirt. “If you ask me what I’d most like to have invented in fashion, I’d say the white shirt. For me, the white shirt is the basis of everything. Everything else comes after,” Lagerfeld once proclaimed. So it makes sense that after celebrating the late designer at Karl For Ever, close friends and influential figures are planning yet another tribute to the designer and his iconic white shirts.

A Tribute to Karl: The White Shirt Project has some famous fashion industry insiders offering their own spin on those signature white shirts. Takashi Murakami, Kate Moss, Cara Delevingne, Diane Kruger, Tommy Hilfiger, Alessandro Michele, Amber Valletta and Carine Roitfeld are reportedly up for the challenge. The shirts will be displayed at Lagerfeld’s headquarters during Paris Fashion Week in September. Each piece will be reproduced 77 times and sell for €777 since seven was the designer’s favorite number.

All proceeds will be donated to Sauver la Vie, a French medical research charity close to Lagerfeld’s heart.

“I have been referred to as the Asian Warhol for some time now,” Murakami says. “Portraits are the quintessential work of Warhol, so in building a career worthy of the moniker, this was one genre I would eventually have to tackle…Warhol’s portraits were done using Polaroid cameras and photo reproduction methods, giving them a very raw feel. I have captured that same rawness using computers and the Internet. I was sent photographs of each subject and then added effects and composited them with images from my work.”
